Careers in Chemistry

To celebrate International Women’s Day, Monash University’s Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences invited a group of our Unit 3 and 4 Chemistry students to participate in ‘Women in their element’, an event for girls studying VCE Chemistry. The event gave students an opportunity to be inspired by women studying and working in science and extend their understanding of chemistry. The program included a keynote presentation from Professor Michelle McIntosh, an associate professor. Professor McIntosh spoke of the challenges she faced in building her career to where she is now and spoke of the importance for more women in STEM careers. After the presentation, students took part in chirality and Functional group workshop, where students participated in hands-on learning with drug design and testing presented by PhD students. After lunch, students participated in a ‘Careers in chemistry’ panel where an all-female panel made up of university undergraduates and PhD students discussed the importance of studying chemistry, why they chose their field and the possible career pathways possible by studying chemistry. Students left the Monash Parkville campus feeling empowered and inspired!
